This classic wagon was bought with a known bad engine. The game plan was to repair the engine and use it as a daily driver, but as you can figure out plans change. Lets do a engine conversion with a 5 speed manual.

Let the swap begin!

The motor has been installed but we ran into a problem. The new (used) engine is from early 1998 with single VANOS system and the old original (late 1998) engine has dual VANOS.  VANOS is BMW’s version of its Variable Valve Timing system.  Unfortunately, the engines can not be easily swapped out. We found a good 3.0 liter out of an X5, just another upgrade.

Sometimes working smarter and not harder is the best way.  The crew at TW found a used direct OEM replacement engine for the wagon so no more dealing with the VANOS system.
